Gli eventi sono detto di esseredetti incompatibili, o mutuamente esclusivi, se il verificarsi di un qualsiasi evento comporta automaticamente il non-verificarsi dei restanti n-1 eventi. Gli eventi incompatibili hanno proprietà come Pr(A ∩ B) = 0. Inoltre, quando A e B sono eventi incompatibili, P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B). In breve, ciò implica che al massimo, può verificarsi uno degli eventi. In termini statistici, la definizione di evento incompatibile è: una proprietà di un insieme di categorie tale che un singolo oggetto è incluso in una sola categoria. Il verificarsi di un evento significa che nessuno degli altri eventi può verificarsi contemporaneamente.

:gli eventi sono detti esaustivi, ilo chenecessari, significa chese almeno uno degli eventi deve avvenire. Un insieme è jointly or exhaustive if at least one of the events must occur. Un altro modo per descrivere eventi esaustivi, è che la loro unione deve coprire tutti gli eventi all'interno dell'intero spazio campionario. Ad esempio, gli eventi A e B sono detti esaustivi se S è lo spazio campionario.
