English: Map showing the seismic record of the northwestern United States and southern British Columbia from 1870 to 2001(?). The green dots and circles represent shallow earthquakes within the continental crust of the North American Plate. Red dots and circles represent shallow to deep earthquakes within the oceanic crust of the Juan de Fuca, Explorer and Gorda Plates including the downgoing slab beneath the North American plate. The size of a symbol (small dot, larger dot, small circle, larger circle) corresponds to the magnitude of the earthquake it stands for. The triangles represent active volcanoes. The stippled lines paralleling the deformation front are isobaths of the downgoing slab, indicating that beneath Washington the dip angle of the slab is less steep than beneath Oregon and British Columbia. The white arrow points to the epicentre of the so-called Nisqually earthquake of 28 February 2001 (M 6.8) which was one of the heaviest earthquakes in the history of Washington state.
